What makes a Masterpiece in Art? Part I
How to define a masterpiece? Obviously, art is subjective but still, there exists a quasi-unanimity about certain works, which are considered to be masterpieces. Why do some dazzling classic Greek bronze nudes of the 4th Century B.C. still move us today? Because we need images of perfect beauty or spirituality. Why can we be captivated by works such as “le pont Japonais” by Monet, “La Dance” by Matisse or “the Descent of the cross” by Van der Weyden? Because we are moved by their emotional messages of joy and sorrow. How come that the lasts self-portraits of Rembrandt touch us so much? Because, they display the knowledge of the self to the highest degree. How to explain the present mania for minimalist interiors such as those by Mies van der Rohe? Because we crave to bring some balance into our too busy lives. Why are we flabbergasted by the wrapping of le Pont Neuf in Paris by Christo? Because we are surprised at seeing the everyday in a new light. Emotional relevant messages will keep moving us…provided the works display technical virtuosity, innovation, universality and timelessness. It is these four conditions, that constitute masterpieces.
